A commitment to carry out a feasibility study on the possibility of building a cycle pump track on land behind the Kilcullen Business Park has been made by Kildare County Council, writes Brian Byrne. However, it will have to wait until existing projects and works outlined in the Parks Section Works Programme have been completed.
The request was made by Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer at the recent meeting of the Kildare-Newbridge MD, by way of motion. While acknowledging that Kilcullen already offers a vast array of activities for the very young and for senior citizens, the councillor highlighted a gap in the form of activities for young people, which is raised regularly with her by students from Cross and Passion College.
"There is a piece of Council-owned land to the rear of Kilcullen GAA and Kilcullen Industrial Park that has never been used for anything and is in a perfect location to provide an outdoor activity such as pump track or skate park," she told the meeting. "The site would not necessarily require a lot of investment if a bike pump track were to be considered, and given that Kilcullen already has a well established cycling organisation there would be plenty of support within the town to operate such a facility."
Cllr O'Dwyer welcomed the commitment to carry out the study, and said she hopes it could be carried out in early 2024. She asked that the item be kept on the Council's progress report so that the Parks Department can update the timeline for it. She added that the location Kilcullen is already the sports hub of the town with all weather pitches, GAA grounds, Soccer club, schools, playground, creche and scouts, so it is the ideal location for another youth activity to address the gap.
