Love of books brings people together

A strong turnout for last evening's inaugural Book Club Social in Fallons was just one more indication that real books have not just survived the Kindle, but are thriving, writes Brian Byrne.
Organised for Irish Book Week by Woodbine Books in Kilcullen and SeanchaĆ Books in Kildare, the event brought together members from some four Book Clubs operating between the two independent bookshops, to discuss, well ... books ... and book clubs. There was also a 'fireside chat' with best-selling memoir author Miriam Mulcahy, whose This is My Sea documents how she dealt with the grief of multiple family bereavements by embracing sea-swimming.
The fact that participants in the event were almost all female triggers a curiosity which your editor will explore at another time. But all present were set from the beginning to enjoy the discussions, book recommendations, spot prizes and the quiz that made up the evening.
Pictured above are the organising team of Dawn Behan (Woodbine), Bernadette Burke (SeanchaĆ), Paula Kavanagh (Woodbine and Coldtober swimming champion) and Sarah Burke (SeanchaĆ).
