Jeremy Burke remembered in uncle's endurance cycle
A cheque for €3,180 was handed over yesterday by local cycling enthusiast Joseph Kelly to his sister Louise for the charity fund established in memory of her son Jeremy Burke, who died suddenly in Canada last January, writes Brian Byrne. The cheque represented the proceeds of a 12-hour solo endurance cycle Joseph undertook last month in memory of his nephew.
He rode a total of 309 kilometres on a route through south Kildare, part of the day in the teeth of an Atlantic storm and 60km/h winds that was crossing the country. At a family gathering yesterday in The Hideout, he thanked all who had supported the cycle — friends and family and work colleagues. He described the result as 'remarkable'. "I had expected to maybe raise a thousand. People are very generous, even though there are so many fundraisers around these days. Every donation was important, whether it was €5 or €50.”
The JBforever27 Foundation is managing funds already raised by a GoFundMe appeal following Jeremy’s unexpected death and from an upcoming sold-out Gala Ball in Perth, Australia, where Jeremy's aunt, Caroline Kelly Morgan, lives. The Foundation has already donated €28,542 to the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust, which helped bring Jeremy home from Canada, and it is also helping the CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) and AnamCara charities as well as funding a music Bursary open to 5th and 6th Year students in CPC.
Louise thanked Joseph for carrying out ‘an arduous’ cycle in aid of the fund, which will help a student in the college where Jeremy had been so happy with his own music. “He would be so delighted that his Uncle Jospeh did this, and that we are all gathered around today supporting each other.”
