Bronze medal for Kilcullen Tidy Towns

Kilcullen has won a Bronze Medal in Kildare in this year's Supervalu Tidy Towns competition, writes Brian Byrne. The overall winner of the competition, Ireland's tidiest town, is Abbeyleix, Co Laois.
Kilcullen Community Action representatives Ray Kelly, Anne Cashman and Noel Clare were at the announcements this morning in Croke Park in Dublin. KCA chairperson Anne said the group are delighted with the Bronze medal. "It's a reflection of the hard work done by all our volunteers," she said.
Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals are awarded in each county to entrants with scores that fall within a set range from the year’s winning score.
The other medal winners in Kildare were (Gold) Celbridge, Kill, Leixlip, Maynooth, Newbridge, Naas and Straffan; (Silver) Ballymore Eustace, Clane and Straffan; and (Bronze) Broadford.
Responding to the news, KCA member Antoinette Buckley said the award is 'so well deserved and such a boost for the town'. "Hard work pays off from such a dedicated team of volunteers," she added. "I am so delighted."
Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer has also congratulated KCA, saying it is a "fantastic achievement and well deserved."
Abbeyleix is also the winner of Ireland's Tidiest Small Town. Geashill in Co Offaly won the Tidiest Village category. Ireland's Tidiest Large Urban Centre is Ballincollig, Co Cork.
The Supervalu Tidy Towns competition has been going on for 65 years. More than 880 towns and villages entered this year.

"Behind all of these are tens of thousands of active volunteers," Minister Heather Humphries told those assembled in Croke Park, commending the sense of pride and community that each one of them represents. "Many of you are lifelong volunteers setting an example for everyone else in your community."
The Minister also thanked the many people from the 'new communities' in Ireland who have joined in with their local Tidy Towns activities.
