Appeal for artist to make repairs to pulpit
A request is being made for an artist capable of making small repairs to the statuary decoration on the Kilcullen Church pulpit, writes Brian Byrne.
The appeal is from Billy Redmond, whose long campaign to have the pulpit replaced in the church was successful last November. The edifice had been in storage in a shed for decades.
"The pulpit is in quite a good state following its move from the shed," Billy says. "Some very minor repairs have to be carried out, mainly some small plaster mouldings, and also one or two statue hands need to be replaced."
Billy would like to hear from any local artist who might be able to help, or anyone who could point him in the right direction to have this piece of the church's history restored. He can be contacted on 087 6311177.
The pulpit and its figures were sculpted by the father of Irish revolutionary Padraic Pearse, and the piece has been in the church since at least the turn into the 1900s, as it appears in photographs taken around that time now in the Lawrence Collection.
