Hillcrest pedestrian crossing now 'live'
It has been a long time coming, and even a long wait to be commissioned, but the new pedestrian lights crossing at Hillcrest is now in operation, writes Brian Byrne.
The crossing, which has been installed by Kildare County Council after a lot of push from the community and from Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer, went 'live' yesterday.
The idea to install the crossing goes back as far as 2007, when Cllr Billy Hillis sought to have it put in place on behalf of the residents of the estates on the north end of town.
That didn't work out, and it wasn't until 2020 that the Kildare-Newbridge MD agreed to put a crossing in place at Hillcrest, subject to funding being available. Work finally began on the installation last March.
