Heydon welcomes 'county boundary intact' in constituency review

Kildare South retains its four Dail seats in the proposed constituency revisions published yesterday, writes Brian Byrne. But some ceding of territory to Kildare North, Laois, and Offaly could affect political calculations for the next general election.
The Kildare South constituency is to remain as a 4-seat constituency, with Kildare North increased to a 5-seater. The electoral divisions of Killashee, Ladytown, Caragh and Donore will move to Kildare North for the next general election, encompassing most (but not all) of those who vote in Two Mile House and Caragh. The review also recommends that Laois areas of Portarlington, Killenard and Ballybrittas, previously in Kildare South, will return to a Laois constituency.
Kildare South Fine Gael TD and Government Minister Martin Heydon says he is sorry to lose these areas but welcomes the fact that this review has kept all three counties of Kildare Laois and Offaly intact. "I have been proud to represent these areas since I was first elected to the Dail in 2011 and have been active in these local communities," he said yesterday. "Rest assured that I will continue to advocate and support these areas for the remainder of this Dail term."
Minister Heydon says he looks forward to contesting the next general election in Kildare South.
