Iron Age in Kildare, Kilcullen talk on Sunday
How the recovery of animal bones in archaeological excavations tell much about ways of life of the Iron Age in Kildare and Laois is the subject of a Heritage Week 2023 talk in Kilcullen Town Hall, writes Brian Byrne.
New Pastures - Iron Age livestock and lifeways of the Irish Iron Age takes place next Sunday 13 August, starting at 5pm when archaeologists from UCC will paint an Iron Age picture of life that revolved around cattle, sheep and horses.
The information was garnered from road schemes and research excavations and explains why the knowledge is of national importance, and how the animal bone assemblages recovered from archaeological sites hold the key to understanding people's lives in an otherwise enigmatic period.
The approximately 1-hour talk will be followed by a hands-on session on zooarchaeologial analysis of animal bones. Refreshments will be provided.
The event is supported by the Irish Research Council's Coalesce Scheme.
