Culture & Diversity Day at Brannoxtown CNS

The first Culture & Diversity Day (CDD) was held today, June 15th, at Brannoxtown CNS, writes school Principal Sarah Fitzpatrick. Children wore ‘country costume’ to school (including lots of GAA jerseys)! Our playground was awash with colour.
Over 20 parent volunteers prepared and set-up stands in our playground to teach children about their country and culture. Country stands were set up for Ireland, Italy, Kenya, Moldova, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestine, Scotland and South Africa. Children had created flags and country names for each stand (table).
Each class had 15-20 minutes to visit countries with their passports. Children tasted food, sampled drinks, listened to myths and legends, sang songs and chatted with the parent volunteers at each country stand.
Other displays included a wall of portraits — one from each child in the school showing how were are all different and unique. The ‘Diversity Display’ used pie charts to show how diverse we are as a school when we examine ‘country of birth’ for students and for parents; over 20 nationalities are represented.
Overall, our first CDD was a wonderful success. Next year, we look forward to expanding on the success of this year’s event and planning an even bigger celebration!
