Glittering CPC Oscars today
The inaugural CPC Oscars film awards were held today at a glittering event in the College for the TY students involved, writes Brian Byrne. The short films were written, directed and edited by groups of the students in the Movie Magic film-making module of their Transition year. (Naas-based Movie Magic for TY provides video workshops for Transition Year students.)
The black tie and formal dress event included screening of clips from the successful nominees for the various categories, announcement of each winner, and presentations of certificates and statuettes. In all, 28 films were made by the students and the nominees for the Oscars had been adjudicated and voted on by the students at a nominations event in April.
Transition Year Coordinator Glenda Groome congratulated all involved, and thanked Georga Dowling and Conor Wafer of Food School who gave up their time and loaned their equipment to decorate the hall, John Swift of Mex Events for loaning the red carpet, uplighters and decorative ropes, Conor Wilkins for sound and Pamper Me Beautiful for the balloons.
The awards presented were Best Direction: CPC Experience, Best Camera Work: Prince of Bel Air, Best Plot Twist: Shaniqua, Best SoundTrack: Ridiculous, Best Editing: CPC Experience, Best Choreography: Ridiculous, Best Special Effects: Fixing Good, Best Movie: Shaniqua, Best Jokes: CPC Experience, Best Costumes/Props: Shape of Me, Best Actor: Max Geissel, Best Villain: Sam Moussoulides, Best Hero: Will Kavanagh, and Best Cameo: Ms Fennell.
“A lot of students found talents that they didn’t realise they had during the module,” Ms Groome said. “It also showed the importance of team work and preparation. They have to think about scripts and costumes, and then it all comes together when Susan and Lavinia of Movie Magic come along to facilitate production.”
The module is scheduled over five days through the school year and every class group has their own session with Movie Magic. There is also a Film Studies module during the year, where movies are evaluated, and this gives background to the Movie Magic work.
