Fairy Trail to be rejuvenated
A further investment in the Fairy Trail in the Valley park will be made by Kilcullen Community Action for this summer, writes Brian Byrne.
At the recent KCA meeting, it was agreed that the funds donated by Paula Phelan and Michelle Reddy from their Nollaig na mBan event in Fallons in January would be allocated to the project.
The Fairy Trail was inaugurated in March 2019 as part of the Kilcullen 700 celebrations but now needs renewal. Antoinette Buckley told the meeting that Ger Doyle, who provided the original fairy 'houses' and signage, will walk the trail to see what needs to be done.
Noel Clare suggested that the trail could be enhanced by providing signs detailing stories about local ghosts and fairies collected by schoolchildren in the 1930s for the Schools Folklore Collection. "Making those available on the trail would make it very interesting — the fairies supposed to dance in Brennan's Field, the ghostly dog on a chain in Greenhills Castle, the priest who wanders the graveyard at nights looking for another priest to serve his funeral mass. The local contributions to the Collection are packed with such stories."
Antoinette Buckley said the trail needs to be relaunched before the summer to facilitate the families who use the Valley.
