Looking Back: Kilcullen in 1964
These views of Kilcullen are screen grabs from an RTE TV feature in 1964, A River Journey Through Kildare, writes Brian Byrne.
The shots are from the opening sequence of the piece, which devotes some 20 seconds to Kilcullen before moving downstream through Newbridge, Straffan and Celbridge and eventually Dublin.
Again we are grateful to Eugene Brennan for picking up the piece in the RTE Archives. Note that the bridge hasn't yet been widened, McCarthy's shop is where Murphy Design is now, and cars on the hill include a Riley 1500, a couple of Morrises, a first generation Ford Cortina and a Ford Consul 315 with its distinctive rear window and lights. A Bedford lorry is delivering Guinness and ale kegs to McTernans.
There is also a cyclist going down the hill in the video section, I wonder who that was?
