The inaugural meeting of the Brigid 1500 Creative Writing Group in Woodbine Books on Wednesday night had an impressive turnout, writes Dawn Behan, with 15 people attending, travelling from as far afield as Prosperous and Hollywood. Kilcullen town was well represented too, with new residents and familiar faces in attendance.
The meeting was ably facilitated by Ilona Blunden of Woodbine Books, who is herself an award winning writer. Ilona began the meeting with a short outline of the purpose of the group, emphasising the importance of a supportive and collaborative setting in a writing group. Everyone was then given the opportunity to introduce themselves.
Writers ranged in experience from published writers to complete novices but all shared the same enthusiasm for the written word. Areas of interest ranged from poetry to memoir, myths and fairy tales to humour.
Everyone agreed that they loved to write but hoped the group would help them to add discipline and focus to their writing. To encourage this, Ilona set a writing task for the group to complete for the next meeting. She also gave some practical advice and tips for getting ideas down on paper and then led the group in a ‘hot penning’ exercise to get our writing muscles working!
