Local lobby required for bus service retention
No decision has yet been made about retaining the 129 bus service between Kilcullen and Newbridge from the end of October, writes Brian Byrne. But feedback from the community about it being an essential need could help with its retention.
The service has been operated on a short term basis by Local Link Kildare South Dublin since July, when the previous operator JJ Kavanagh pulled out. The temporary arrangement was negotiated by local representatives Martin Heydon TD and Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer with the NTA, which committed to exploring ways of ensuring that a permanent basis for the route is achieved. The NTA has sole decision on funding such services.
However, with the end of the interim service just weeks away, Local Link has confirmed that no decision has yet been made as to what will happen after October.
The operator has suggested families and groups who have observations about the timetables should email their thoughts to kildareSD@locallink.ie.
"The more that ask and make requests, the better," says Yvonne Carey Tyrrell, who has been in contact with Local Link about there being no service on Saturday mornings. The operator responded that feedback would be helpful that a Saturday morning bus would be of huge benefit to the local community, particularly young and older people.
