Dawn Walk fundraising earmarked for Pieta students support
The funds raised by last weekend's Summer Concert and next Saturday's Dawn Walk are earmarked for an initiative by Pieta House, The Resilience Academy, writes organiser Lorna Brophy.
The idea offers programmes for secondary school students aimed at equipping them with emotional resilience tools and came about as a result of research completed by the National Suicide Research Foundation in 2017. This identified a 163% increase in people under the age of 18 presenting due to suicide or self-harm between 2011-2016.
This resilience programme has helped to develop school-based suicide prevention programmes assisted by
• in house psychotherapist,
• interviews with school staff,
• Focus groups with students,
• And input from experts in the areas such as body image, cyber bullying, occupational stress, and LGBT.
This is a demand based service — so schools request the Resilience Academy programmes as 'schools are the experts in issues affecting their students, they understand the importance of mental health and education for young people'. However they may not have the expertise to deal with and educate their students on this issue, so this support is now available.
This service within Pieta house is reliant on donations and contributions from voluntary sources.
We ask for your support for this concert so we can assist the young people in our community and across the country.
