Weatherday: The first UFOs
Acrobatics at Foynes Air Show (2018). |
Rather cloudy with patchy light rain or drizzle precedes heavier rain in the afternoon, followed by occasional showers in the evening. Possibly thundery at times, giving a risk of spot flooding.
Highest afternoon temperatures of around 17 degrees, in light to moderate easterly winds.
On this day in 1947 American businessman Kenneth Arnold saw a number of objects “flying like saucers” while piloting a small plane over Mount Rainier in Washington. It is considered the first modern sighting of UFOs and gave rise to the term flying saucer.
