On this day in 1942, the young Dutch Jewish girl Anne Frank was given a diary for her birthday. The entries in the diary from June 1942 to August 1944, the account of her family's hiding in Amsterdam from the Nazis, became one of the most famous personal accounts of the Holocaust.
