It Says in The Bridge: June 2022

The June edition of The Bridge leads off with another good year for KCA, in a report from the recent AGM which provided an update on the many projects currently running under the group's umbrella, writes Brian Byrne
The front page also highlights a group of Scoil Bhride pupils commemorating the anniversary of the Battle of Old Kilcullen in 1798, an annual event for them with flags, costume and replica weaponry. There's a full story inside on that visit and its importance in maintaining our sense of place.
Our sense of place in sports terms is the stuff of the centre spread, which features the Kilcullen U15 Girls FĂ©ile 2022 stars and their journey to qualification for the event this year. A must-read for local GAA fans.
Other stories also involve the young people of Kilcullen and its institutions, including the 'Walk for Water' trek by CPC students, to highlight the global issue of scarce safe water for many people. The call for a 'Youth Space' is also headlined, and there are pictures from the end of year show by students of Drama Dynamics.
In news stories, we have the crisis averted in the Text Alert scheme as a new committee is formed to keep it going. There's more gold medal news from Nolans, and the success of a Lions Club fundraiser golf event to raise money towards the provision of an adapted vehicle for a local person with a disability.
From our regulars, the KWWSPCA remind of their upcoming Summer Bazaar, Julie Felsbergs poses the question of what would you do 'if Jesus came to your house?', Billy Redmond speaks off his cuff on why Ireland should join NATO, Mary Orford looks back at past days of achievement by 'The Rags', and Sean Landers gives us the first instalment of a series about a 'local unsung hero', Peter Purcell Gilpin. Cliona Kelliher's 'Living Sustainably' series looks this month at matters in the home.
There's a special two-page summary report from the proceedings of the recent Parish Synods, which provides food for thought on the future of the Catholic Church and which will be part of Vatican-based deliberations over the coming year or more.
The schools are all in. The Pitch & Putt club is dependable as ever, and the Community Centre highlights how it is becoming much more than a sports-oriented facility.
It's The Bridge again, continuing through its 52nd year, available in the usual places today.
