It Says in The Bridge: May 2022

Lots of smiles on the May Bridge front page, from two stories of success, writes Brian Byrne. The lead is the unexpected level of donations to the LauraLynn 'Locks for Love' challenge taken by local girl Lauren Boyle, pictured before and after a haircut that had brought in more than €1,600 at the time of writing. The other shows happy cast members of the recent Kilcullen Drama Group production which featured sellout nights and standing ovations. This picture is director Eilis Phillips after receiving a bouquet presentation from the youngest member of the cast, Harry Murphy.
Inside colour has more pictures from 'The Two Loves of Gabriel Foley', and in the centre some of the yarn displays on the bridge by the Suas Knitting Group. There's a facing story also about the Drama Group, with the presentation to longtime member John Martin in a nostalgic 'This is your Theatre Life' pre-show event.
Fundraising in several areas makes for a number of stories in this issue, including the €32,000 raised in the local 'Calves for Ukraine' sale at Leinster Marts, and other initiatives by the River Cafe, Ballyshannon Action Group, and Maintain Hope. Much support for others even in difficult times.
Other news features include a piece about the work of graphic artist Niamh O'Connor for local KCA projects, and a look at a recent geophysical survey conducted at the Old Kilcullen monastic site, at the behest of the Old Kilcullen Area Community Association — lots still to learn about our heritage past.
The regulars are all there, Mary Orford looks back at the merry month of May in the days of the May Procession. Noel Clare is 'Out and Away' not far away, taking in a local loop around Old Kilcullen. Sean Landers is a little further down the road, recovering detail about the no longer existing Halverstown House. And a former regular is back, Billy Redmond is writing again 'Off the Cuff' ... there are many readers will be happy. An essay on an old bed by John Duffey is whimsical and thought-provoking.
Cliona Kelliher's 'Living Sustainably' series looks at gardening, Eilis Phillips answers '20 Questions', and there's a profile of how Pat Kelly is banging on in retirement.
In the schools there is retirement from St Joseph's Halverstown, and pupils learning about magnets and sunflowers and more. Brannoxtown CNS gives us a primer on the noble game of Cricket.
Sports nostalgia in a reproduction of a programme from a football match between Kilcullen and Athgarvan in 1976, will have names noted and consideration on 'where are they now?'.
And finally, a farewell from Toddlers and Wobblers, a creche which has helped with the life's start of 20 years' of small ones.
What the Bridge is all about, chronicling the daily and lifetime doings of our community. In the usual outlets.
