Kilcullen paddlers spent afternoon on trip to Athgarvan, for Ukraine

Some 17 paddlers took off this afternoon from Kilcullen Canoe Club heading for Athgarvan as part of their fundraiser for the Irish Red Cross Ukrainian Refugee Crisis Appeal, writes Brian Byrne.

This morning, a group paddled from Carnalway as part of the event, which is geared to  achieving a total of  981 kilometres, the length of the Dnipro River that flows through Ukraine. (UPDATE: by 8pm the club had totalled up the length of the Dnipro, and had raised over €9,000 with donations still coming in.)

An online raffle associated with the event had exceeded its €5,000 target at the time of this writing in late afternoon. Other funding is by way of sponsorship by club members and friends for the relay-style paddle from 8am to 8pm today.

The fundraiser has achieved support from national and international contributions.
