It Says in The Bridge: March 2022
The issue that opens the 52nd year of The Bridge has a happy lead story headlining the return of the Red Hot Music Club to Fallons, writes Brian Byrne. The first post-pandemic gig will feature Luka Bloom, who kicked off the club way back in 1998 in Fallons Red House restaurant.
The club had previously resurrected almost exactly two years ago in Kilcullen, after 17 years, before the music industry was 'stood down' with the arrival of coronavirus.
The front page also flags the main story in this issue, the public consultation on the Market Square and Kilcullen Public Realm plan. There's a detailed look at the various elements, and the magazine's editorial reminds that people have until 23 March 2022 to make submissions.
Elsewhere there are further signs of post-pandemic normality emerging, including the photo-spread from the first Table Quiz in town since two years ago. An 'all smiles' affair for obvious reasons as the Lions Club and supporters got together to rack their collective brains. There's news of the upcoming 'Time of My Life' musical in CPC, again the first time in two years that there will be a live audience for the annual show.
Sweet treats are the subject of a piece about The Coffee Hatch at the Community Centre, profiling Pete de Chef whose cookies received ministerial approval from no less than Josepha Madigan, Minister of State for Special Education. Another entrepreneurial story notes that local founders of the Faerly sustainable living online shop, Eoin Houlihan and James Byrne, are in line for a Green Award for their enterprise.
In features from Bridge regulars, the KCA column this month is an explainer about the various projects which are in train under the banner of Kilcullen Community Action. A timely initiative, as there are quite a few, impacting on a range of areas in Kilcullen daily life.
Julie Felsbergs hands over her spiritual column this month to sidekick Bella, her stunning black Labrador, to give March readers some Paws for Thought. Bella is a previously-hidden revelation here. Still on matters of religion, there's also news of how Kilcullen parish is getting involved in the Synod of Rome planned for 2023.
In Out and Away, Noel Clare visits the Rath of Mullaghmast, Cliona Kelliher explains the Circular Economy in Living Sustainably, and Mary Masterson is grilled by 20 Questions. A look back at the Kilcullen District Nursing Association Committee which operated for more than 20 years is presented by Mary Orford, Sean Landers ponders on some New Abbey Saints, and given the next festival, John Duffey looks back at the often-hard life of St Patrick.
Our local schools have been learning about farming, the American Super Bowl, Climate Change, Maths in Numeria, and the science behind making playdough.
Sports matters are lean this month, but the ever-reliable St Bridget's Pitch & Putt Club brings news that they have now gone online with their own web page. Check it out.
All that, and more, as usual from the usual outlets. Enjoy.
