Plant bulbs now for pollinators

The Bulbs for Bees initiative by Gaisce - The President's Award is a celebration of 35 years of the awards, writes Brian Byrne.

Marking the milestone, Gaisce is inviting everyone in the country to plant pollinator-friendly bulbs this autumn, as part of helping to safeguard the future of the Irish bees population. Appropriate bulbs are Crocus, Yellow Garlic, and Grape Hyacinth.

A third of the food we eat every day depends on bees for pollination, but a third of the bee population is threatened with extinction because we have drastically reduced the amount of flowers whose pollen they eat and places where they can safely nest.
