On this day in 1783, a rooster, a duck, and a sheep were sent aloft in a hot air balloon by the Montgolfier Brothers, the sheep demonstrating that animals could survive at altitude. The following month, Étienne Montgolfier became the first human to lift off the Earth in a flying craft.
