Weatherday: Somme carnage

Hanging basket in the Library Garden.

Early fog will burn off to give a day of hazy sunshine. It will be warm, with highs of 22-23deg in light breezes from the west.

On this day in 1916, more than 19,000 British soldiers died in the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

There were 6,000 German fatalities, mainly inflicted by the French, who lost relatively few combatants.
