On this day in 1796, the Orange Order held its first 'Twelfth' demonstration, a hundred and six years after William of Orange's victory at the Battle of the Boyne, actually to commemorate 1691 Battle of Aughrim in Co Galway, the decisive and bloodiest encounter of the Williamite War.
