'Get involved with Council' on climate action

A submission has been made by climate action groups for the appointment of a Biodiversity Officer at Kildare County Council, a recent online biodiversity event heard, writes Brian Byrne.

During the discussion after her talk on Biodiversity and Health, hosted by Kilcullen Community 4 Climate Action, Dr Liz Cullen said the remit for biodiversity is currently held by the county's Heritage Officer, 'and it is just too much'.

Cliona Kelliher of KC4CA urged people to contact their local councillors and TDs on climate action, saying grass-roots effort can achieve change from the bottom up. "It's the most powerful way," she said, adding that people should take part in all the consultation documents which are put out by Kildare County Council.

"Just get involved with local groups which can join the Public Participation Network," she said. "The Council has Strategic Policy Committees, one of them for Climate Action and the Environment. The PPN elects members from its groups to SPCs and they can bring the views of groups directly to Council.

Liz Cullen agreed, saying 'contact the Council in every way you can'. "Every little thing matters," she said. "Just because it can seem overwhelming, don't give up."
