Booklet available on how to record wildlife
A beginner's guide to recording Ireland's wildlife is available free from the National Biodiversity Data Centre, writes Brian Byrne.
The 12-page publication explains in straightforward language and with superb photographs just what biodiversity is, why it needs to be recorded, and how to go about the process.
There are links to a number of dedicated monitoring schemes being run by the NBDC as well as explanations on Invasive Species, Pollinators, Species Identification, and Recording in the Field. The booklet can be downloaded from here.
Meantime, grants of up to €5,000 are now available from the National Parks & Wildlife Service for small projects to record all aspects of natural history.
The scheme has previously assisted in projects to monitor bats, moths, aquatic plants, snipes, and nature publications. Grants are aimed at volunteer, unpaid recorders, or groups, societies and associations of recorders who have limited or no access to financial supports for their work. Full details of the scheme can be downloaded from here.
