Book of old Ballitore and its inhabitants in 18th century
A digitised copy of Ballitore & Its Inhabitants Seventy Years Ago, by Betsy Shackleton, is available from the County Kildare Online Electronic History Journal.
The book was published in Dublin in 1862. Betsy Shackleton was the niece of Mary Leadbeater, and the book takes the form of a trip around the village, house by house, introducing us to the sights and inhabitants along the way. It is a social document as much as it is of interest in historical terms. Kildare Library Services included it in the reprint of the Annals of Ballitore in 2009.
Betsy died in Ballitore on 9 March 1943 and is buried in the little Quaker burial ground there.
