A 'more robust' infrastructure to improve safety for motorists at Thompson's Cross is the aim of a €30,000 allocation announced today, writes Brian Byrne.

Welcoming the funds as part of an almost €19m allocation for work on the county's roads during 2021, Minister of State Martin Heydon said  it is a project that 'needed to be delivered' due to the number and high intensity of accidents which occur at the junction, and the risk of loss of life.

"A lot of work has gone on behind the scenes at Municipal District level to ensure that Thompson's Cross was put forward and considered for funding," he said in a statement this afternoon. "This is a direct result of motions and questions put forward by Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer. Cllr O'Dwyer and I, working with Kilcullen Gardai, have been pushing for this junction to be addressed for over a year."
