Be careful how you use fatballs

Frank Mitchell has noticed that a kind, well-meaning person has been hanging fatballs around the Valley, and along the mass path, for the benefit of the birds in the locality.

He has asked that we highlight the following advice from BirdWatchIreland regarding the use of fatballs in plastic netting.

"Avoid hanging fatballs in the plastic netting that they sometimes come in — these are very dangerous for birds! Be sure to buy a special fatball/suet-block feeder or cage, and if your fatballs/suet-blocks don't fit in this then break them up a bit!"

Of course, this is also good advice for those of us at home feeding our garden birds.
