Warning about Covid vaccine scams

A Covid vaccine scam aimed at older people living alone has been highlighted by RTE's Medical Correspondent Fergal Bowers and by Gardai, writes Brian Byrne.

The scam starts with a phone call telling the person there is a slot available for a vaccination at a hospital, usually picked at random. When the recipient says they can't travel, they are asked for personal details, like age and whether they live alone.

There's then an offer to come to their home to give them the vaccination. This is a scam. A dangerous one and a heartless one, building on fear.

Call your local Gardai if you get such a call. GardaĆ say there are multiple scams operating across Ireland with regards to the Covid-19 vaccine, and warned the public to be vigilant and suspicious of any calls, voicemails, emails and similar relating to a vaccination offer.

The matter has also been warned against by the PSNI in Northern Ireland, since the beginning of the rollout of the Pfizer vaccine there.
