Consultation on selling excess own-generated electricity

A public consultation is now under way about a plan that will allow individuals, farmers, businesses and community groups to sell renewable electricity into the grid, writes Brian Byrne.

The Microgeneration Support Scheme (MSS) is being designed to allow citizens and communities generate their own renewable electricity, and receive a fair price when they sell the excess into the grid.

At the moment, while there are grants available for the installation of a range of micro-generation technologies, such as solar photovoltaic panels, there is no support scheme for selling excess generation into the national grid.

Full details on the scheme, and how the public can make submissions on the plan, are available here.

The closing date for submissions is 5.30pm on Thursday 18 February.
