On this day in 1979, the Iran hostage crisis began when the US embassy in Teheran was seized by militants supporting the Ayatollah Khomeini, and 66 American citizens were taken hostage, 52 would be held for more than a year, causing so far unrepaired damage in relations between Iran and the US.
