October Bridge on sale
A rather moody shot of the Autumn Equinox effect through Noel Scullion's 'spear' sculpture for Dun Ailinne is the cover picture on the October Bridge magazine, now on sale in the usual outlets, writes Brian Byrne. As the Queen song goes, 'It's a Kind of Magic', which happens over two very short periods each year. If we're weather-lucky.
Once again, Kilcullen's community magazine, in its 50th year, has a wide range of articles and news items reflecting the variety of Kilcullen life, and also its history. That last is well exampled this month, including a delve into the local newspapers by Mary Orford about 'The Kilcullen Shooting Affray' in November 1920. Re-publishing of an article written by Brian Keyes in 1976 looks much further back, asking 'Has Kilcullen a Patron Saint?' from the monastic period of Patrick and his bishops. Sean Landers meantime ponders on a painting once in Harristown House by the 17th century Dutch painter Albert Cuyp. Bet you didn't know about that, did you?
In the magazine's centre spread we're bang up to date with the reopening of the three non-food pubs in the last couple of weeks. 'At last, a pint in a pub' is the headline that says it all, and pictured with their black stuff, and some amber too, are a number of familiar locals' faces (and a few masked ones from the publicans).
Other features this month include a Grangecon local foods operation with a number of Kilcullen suppliers. There's the second part of a profile of one of our long-serving local postmen, Michael O'Connor. Ronan Murray answers 20 questions, and Noel Clare's 'Out and away from Kilcullen' series this month focuses on nature in Narraghmore Bog.
The schools are fully back in action, and fill their usual spaces with lots of activities and pictures. A key sport story comes from local man Joseph Kelly who writes about how cyclist Sam Bennett has put the country in a good place. Emma Tobin notes that the future is bright for Kilcullen AFC after the win by the club's U15s in the regional final of the SFAI Cup. The KCA page this time is looking at future planning for Kilcullen in a number of areas, Julie Felsbergs muses on optimising the 'pause-abilities' of these Covid times, and the KWWSPCA appeals for space for a new Animal Shelter, with 'time running out'.
Lots of magic around, but more still needed ...
