Outrage follows multiple fireworks complaints, threats
There's growing outrage over a 'gang' of young people in Kilcullen who are said to be 'terrorising' people, writes Brian Byrne.
This follows an earlier version of this story which reported on fireworks being thrown at homes, and one resident fearing one would set her mobile home on fire. She and her partner have now reported 'extreme threats' to Kilcullen gardai.
"My family are being targeted and extreme threats are being made against us," she says, "one being that they will come back and burn down our mobile. I don't feel safe and neither do my family. These are a group of 20+ young boys and girls around the age of 14 years old!"
This morning she had gone on Facebook video to highlight what she described as a 'sleepless' weekend after fireworks were thrown at the mobile home where she lives. She said the fireworks were thrown over the hedge and she was afraid one would get under the mobile home and set it on fire. "They also threw them at my Mam's front door. I never thought it would be like this in our small town, but there's a group of around 20 young lads, and young ones too, going around the town and causing havoc. It's very concerning. It's actually shocking."
Another woman says the group has been 'absolutely horrendous' to her family and neighbours. "Fireworks pointed at houses," she posted on a Facebook thread that followed this report. "Rocks at my own window just for telling them to keep it down, and abuse."
Earlier, Kilcullen gardai said they are responding to multiple calls in estates around town in recent days about fireworks complaints. The problems are reportedly being caused by groups of people congregating in the estates and setting off the fireworks.
The gardai say that any such instances should be phoned in to them immediately and they will respond. "We're available until the early hours of the morning, and we have been responding to calls from around the town," Sgt Tom O'Donoghue said.
Pet owners are also concerned with the ramp-up of fireworks explosions in the run-up to Halloween. Not just in the town itself, it's also a problem in surrounding communities. "They obviously don't own a dog," one Calverstown poster wrote on their local community Facebook page, appealing to those responsible to 'stop the bangers'.
