Halloween celebrated in old Leitrim

Halloween customs in Ireland are widely believed to come from the Celts, writes Garreth Byrne, who was born and raised in Kilcullen and now lives in Leitrim, retired from a teaching life in Africa and China.

The general belief is that on the evening of 31st October the spirits that inhabit mountains, forests, lakelands and elsewhere are disturbed by the changing seasons. November is winter and they fear the approaching climate hardships.

Winter begins on 1st November, so they scatter around and swoop into the sky shrieking aloud in fear and panic.
