Heritage Week 2020 projects to be virtual this year
The organisers of National Heritage Week 2020 are asking people to undertake projects for this year that do not involve physical events, writes Brian Byrne.
The theme of the week, from 15-23 August, is Learning from our Heritage, and participants are invited to undertake local projects which explore a topic related to the theme.
Participation can involve family, community, or organisation, and the idea is that the project will culminate in Heritage Week in a format that can be shared without the need for a physical venue, such as video, podcast or oral history recording.
A PowerPoint presentation or blog could be used to disseminate the project, or through a community’s or organisation’s newsletter. An online talk, workshop, demonstration or exhibition are other possibilities; or via an interview with local radio or newspaper. A newly opened – and moderated – social media account could also be used to tell others about the project.
"Projects can comprise researching an aspect of heritage on your doorstep, sharing or re-learning a skill from our heritage, or exploring an aspect of Ireland’s educational heritage," the organisers say in an email to interested groups.
A national call for Heritage Week projects will be made later this month, and registration for project ideas will open then on the Heritage Week website.
