Looking Back: Mary Conroy and Kilcullen ICA
Today we're taking a look at one of Antoinette Buckley's clippings relating to her grandmother, Mrs Mary Conroy, writes Brian Byrne.
The type style suggests the Irish Independent, and the photo on the left shows Mrs Conroy — for whom Conroy Park estate is named — at a function in McTernan's run by the Fine Gael Social Club of Droicead Nua, Athgravan and Kilcullen branches. She is with Mary Stanley and Charlie Clarke.
The article on the right is by the late Mary Norton, a well known local journalist and regular writer in the Social and Farming sections of the Irish Independent as well as in papers local to this area under the pseudonym Monica Carr. The piece is a pen-picture of Mrs Conroy soon after she had become President of the newly-formed Kilcullen ICA Guild.
The article makes reference to a trip by the Guild to Belfast, where Mrs Conroy had arranged to meet the then Premier of Northern Ireland, Captain Terence O'Neill, but a mix-up derailed the meeting. Captain O'Neill subsequently wrote a letter of apology.
The Secretary of the Kilcullen ICA Guild at the time was Sheila Peacocke, and the Treasurer was the late Julia Morris.
