Listen out for the missed call scam
That old but profitable 'missed call' scam is busy today, writes Brian Byrne.
Twice during the day I have received a phone call that rings briefly then shows as a missed call. If I had only come back to my phone and seen it, I might have been tempted to call back, except that I'm wary of any such calls.
It would have cost me, probably quite dearly, if I had.
The phone prefix shows the origin is in Mali. If you call back you are on a premium very high cost call of which the recipients pocket most of the cost.
Think before you hit any missed call that isn't from someone you know. Note also that different phone numbers are typically used, but in my case both had the +223 Mali prefix. The scam can come from other countries too.
