Active Home Week starts today for schoolchildren
What should have been Active Schools Week is now being celebrated as Active Home Week, running from today 27 April, writes Brian Byrne.
Children and staff of schools are encouraged to spend one hour daily doing physical exercise or similar activity.
"We're asking them to share those experiences with us in photos and stories," says the Principal of Brannoxtown CNS, Sarah Fitzpatrick. "Accordingly we have just four areas of learning in this week's Weekly Learning Guide: Language, Maths, Creativity and Activity."
The Active School website has a range of resources and challenges to make the week work while the schools are closed because of the coronavirus.
To complete the challenge, young people have to find four different ways of being active each day, making sure that these total 60 minutes or more of physical activity.
Active School Week is part of the Active School Flag initiative of the Department of Education and Skills. The flag is awarded to schools which strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community.
