Another crash at Thompson’s Cross

There was another crash at Thompson’s Cross this afternoon, adding yet another such incident to a long list, writes Brian Byrne.

Two units of Kildare Fire Brigade attended, along with gardai from Kilcullen Station, but there are no reports of injuries.

Cllr Tracey O’Dwyer noted in a motion to the Kildare Newbridge MD in November that there is an average of one crash a month at the cross, according to feedback from Kilcullen Gardai. She was seeking the provision of a roundabout.

The Council responded that €75,000 was spent in Low Cost safety improvement works at the cross last year following a review of the situation at the junction. The report indicated that major resources would be required to provide a roundabout.

Since a roads realignment as part of the completion of the M9 motorway at Kilcullen, the intersection has become notorious both for collisions and difficulty in negotiating it safely.

At a meeting meeting of Kilcullen Community Action in November, Cllr O'Dwyer said that the Kildare Newbridge MD engineer, who has since taken over responsibility for Kilcullen on 1 January, had visited Thompson's Cross and was backing the need for a roundabout.
