Restoration of downtown premises
It’s great to see work started on refurbishing another building on Main Street which had become fairly derelict, writes Brian Byrne.
The property has been bought by Martin Murphy of Murphy Design and Build, and Martin is planning to relocate his office to the premises when the substantial works are completed.
It’s interesting that this is a return to home for him in one way, as for a time in the past it was his family’s home.
It is an old property, and features in the Lawrence Collection photographs of Kilcullen taken at the turn of the 19th century. It was the location of J Barbers Cycle Shop for decades, and in the early 1960s was a popular sweet shop run by the McCarthy family, especially with cinema goers in the nearby Town Hall.
The property was most recently active as the Ruby Shoes ladies footwear shop run by Michelle Kirwan, which closed in 2010.
If anyone has any other stories of the premises, the Diary would love to hear of them.
