Call for Council to provide public car park in Kilcullen
The provision of a public car park in Kilcullen is the direct responsibility of Kildare County Council, as the authority makes plans to reduce on-street car parking in the town, writes Brian Byrne.
That's the view of locally-based councillor Tracey O'Dwyer, who is calling on the Council to provide a public car park 'to meet the ever expanding needs of Kilcullen'.
In a statement today, Cllr O'Dwyer says the town is 'thriving', with a variety of businesses offering many services. "People travel from the wider hinterland to carry out their business in Kilcullen, and to support and meet this demand there is a need for a public car park."
The councillor makes the point that currently the only public car park in the town is the market square, as all other areas used for off-street parking are privately owned.
Under plans for the redevelopment of the market square currently being prepared by Kildare County Council, it is understood that the square will no longer be available for car parking.
This has been a source of concern to a number of businesses in the downtown Kilcullen area, who say the loss of the spaces there could adversely affect their trade.
"It is time for the Council to invest in proper infrastructure, to improve the quality of life for both residents and visitors alike," Cllr O'Dwyer says.
