Kilcullen expresses interest in 'biodiversity town' project

An expression of interest from Kilcullen to be one of ten Biodiversity Towns in Kildare has been lodged with Kildare County Council, writes Brian Byrne.

The recent meeting of Kilcullen Community Action heard that a number of other communities have applied for the ten locations in the project, which is being supported by the Kildare Leader Partnership through the Council's Heritage department.

The project will see the development of local Biodiversity Action Plans for the successful communities, each of which will be required to provide a team to work with consultants.

KCA chair Ann Cashman said a successful outcome would help with the pollinator element of the Tidy Towns Awards.

The recent Pollinator meeting will be followed up by a newsletter in the new year, the meeting also heard. Other ideas being developed include an interaction with Wild Kildare, and also organising a biodiversity talk in association with the Council.

It is also planned to establish bird-boxes around the area, and KCA members are asked to seek some feedback from the community on where might be suitable locations.
