Kilcullen Badminton update
A busy few weeks for Kilcullen Badminton Club both in South West Leagues and Dublin District Leagues and Cups, writes KBC's Match Secretary Enda O'Neill. Plenty of matches were played between November and the start of December. We will start with our Dublin District League with Enda O’Neill and the Division 5 Men who wanted to build on their impressive cup win against Fairplay earlier that month.
Their first DDL outing was on 26 November when they hosted old rivals PBAI. A successful start for the lads with a 3-1 win over PBAI in front of a home crowd. The KBC men face Danum on Wednesday 18 December in their Quarter Final match. Good luck to John Mullen, Oisin Egan, Vincent Coller and Enda in their next match.
Also playing in Kilcullen's Community Centre on 26 November were Oliver P. Valroy and his Division 9 Mix team who hosted Rush. A great start for Olivier, Audrey Moore, Kendra Valroy and Aiden O’Connell securing a 4-0 victory over the visiting side.
On Wednesday 27 November Owen Wallace travelled all the way to Roundwood with a fairly depleted team with two regular members of the team out with injury and one other out of action due to work commitments. So Enda, John and Vincent went on the journey across the Wicklow Gap. Alas it was not Owen and the team's night and they suffered a 4-0 defeat to a strong Roundwood side. Hopefully Owen will have his full squad back in action for their next match when Roundwood visit on 19 December.
Also in Roundwood that night were Kasi Va and the Division 7 Men who played their Roundwood counterparts in the second round of the Dublin District Cup. A better night for Kilcullen in this match, although KBC didn’t have it all their own way they still managed to grind out a victory with this exciting match going to points count-back with both teams equal on games and sets. Kasi, Ross Cole, Keith O’Neill and Ramlal Hooda face Boyne in their Quarter Final match scheduled to be played in Kilcullen Community Centre on 7 January.
In the South West League Kilcullen's Grade 2 Men captained by the ever reliable Murt Dunne and our Grade 5 Ladies captained by Teresa McGlynn both made to semi finals in their respective grades. Unfortunately neither team managed to progress to the finals with Murt's team beaten by a strong Country Club and Teresa's team beaten by Carlow YM. Hard luck to both captains and their teams on a great South West League run.
KBC’s Grade 7 Mix team of captain Audrey Moore, Andrea Kis, Austin Egan and Peter Curley have had a flying start to the league. Three wins from three matches in the league from this team who have never played competitive badminton before this season. Audrey and her team have already racked up 11 sets only dropping one set to Bough in their first game. Looking like a successful season ahead for this team if they can keep up their current form. Grade 7 mix have their final mix match of the year on Tuesday 17 Dec against Portlaoise and will resume in the new year again against St Laurence's on 9 January.
Finally as it is the end of the year, I would just like as match secretary to thank a few people, Brian Byrne our Kilcullen Diary Editor and Mark Phelan Sports Editor of The Bridge, thank you both for publishing my reports over the year, helping to promote our Badminton Club. I would also like to thank Claire Crawford, Manager of Kilcullen Community Centre and her staff for all their hard work assisting me with booking the hall (sometimes at late notice!) and for having the Centre in tip top shape for visiting teams to our club. As usual the comments from visiting teams are always positive with the fantastic facilities that we have in Kilcullen. And of course I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Best of luck to our teams in their upcoming matches.
