Community CCTV grant scheme extended

The grant scheme for community group CCTV schemes has been extended into 2020, writes Brian Byrne. It was due to end on 31 January 2019.

Deputy Martin Heydon has welcomed the extension of the scheme, which has processed just 22 applications since it was launched in 2017.

It is administered by the Department of Justice, and Deputy Heydon says he has discussed the situation in detail with Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan and requested the extension.

It's thought the low take-up was die to difficulties in developing protocols and dealing with data protection issues.

The extension will be welcomed by Kilcullen Community Action which is working on an application for a grant for a scheme here. Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer also organised an information evening on the matter earlier this year.

The grant provides up to 60pc of the total cost of community CCTV systems.
