Crookstown to get one of initial broadband hubs

Crookstown Upper, with Ballitore sitting in the south-east corner, is one of the 300 communities in the country to get a high-speed public internet hub as part of the new national broadband plan, writes Brian Byrne.

The townland straddles the R448, and includes the Crookstown Retail and Business Park beside Scoil Naisuinta Naomh Lorcán.

According to the plan, these locations will get their hubs within the first year of implementation of the plan.

The Back Gate Lodge at Kilkea Demesne is another south Kildare location in the 300.

North of Kilcullen, St David's NS on the Piper's Hill Campus at Killashee will also get one of the first tranche of hubs.

Surveying and design teams will start work in early January in the first locations for what Taoiseach Leo Varadkar calls the most important State investments since rural electrification.

The hubs are designed to provide public access at libraries, community centres, schools and GAA facilities. The high-speed internet access will be free, and available across the country from the second quarter of next year.

The locations have been selected as having the worst connections to broadband at the moment, and have been given priority in the €3bn National Broadband Plan.
