A Woodbine winter season

Events at Woodbine Books are gathering pace in advance of Christmas, and the shop seems to be becoming one of the go-to venues in town, writes Brian Byrne.

Upcoming over the next while are at least two book launches, and a seasonal music evening which in the intimate surroundings of the busy bookshelves should be well worth putting on your personal calendar.

A new book launch and story-telling with Emma-Jane Leeson will be based around the latest Johnny Magory book, Johnny Magory and the Forest Fleadh Cheoil. It takes place at 11am on Saturday 23 November. Ideal for those who still read stories to their children.

Renowned author, zoologist, ethnologist and painter Desmond Morris will launch his latest book, Postures: Body Language in Art, on Thursday 5 December at 7pm. In it he analyses a wide range of imagery, from prehistoric masks, Greek statues, Renaissance frescoes and old master paintings to folk and contemporary art.

Songs for a Winter Night on Friday 13 December at 7pm will be an evening of seasonal music, poetry, laughter and prose from the pens of Patrick Kavanagh, Charles Dickens, Thomas Hardy, Mary Oliver and Laurie Lee, with new work from Angela Keogh and John MacKenna and music penned by the Fleet Foxes, Jackson Brown, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Gretchen Peters and Shane Sullivan plus traditional Christmas songs. Performances by Shane Sullivan (guitar and vocals), Angela Keogh and John MacKenna. Tickets for this are €10, and should be booked early.

Every one of those occasions is also another opportunity to explore Christmas gift possibilities.
