Regional Salt Barn 'very useful' for Kildare
A regional Salt Barn proposed for Jigginstown in Naas will be 'very useful' for Kildare, Director of Services for Roads, Transportation and Public Safety Niall Morrissey told the recent meeting of Kildare Newbridge Municipal District, writes Brian Byrne.
"It will be very useful to have it in the county instead of having to go elsewhere for salt when needed," he said in the course of a discussion on the Council's current Machinery Yard in Newbridge.
The Council is proposing to move the Machinery Yard to a site in Jigginstown which will also incorporate the Salt Barn. Mr Morrissey said the Department of Transport and the Council will share the costs equally of the 5-acre Jigginstown site.
During the discussion, Cllr Fiona McLoughlin Healy said there should be some form of 'community benefit' to the people of Newbridge when the site of the current Machinery Yard is sold. "Newbridge has hosted this yard in the middle of town for years and should get something back from any sale," she said, adding that at the moment there was no community facility where groups could hold meetings.
Cllr Noel Heavey said there was a 'huge dearth' of community and youth facilities in Newbridge, and indicated that perhaps some of the proceeds should be used to build the long-awaited skate park.
The drawings for the Salt Barn can be viewed here. The project is currently in a Part 8 planning process.
The Salt Barn will hold 23,000 tonnes of salt, and the site will also be used for the storage of snow ploughs, gritters, and other winter roads maintenance equipment.
