Nicholastown cycle lane mooted
The provision of a cycle lane at Nicholastown from the Kilcullen Business Park into the town is to be considered as one way of slowing traffic in the area, writes Brian Byrne.
A motion proposing it will be raised at next week's meeting of the Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District, by Cllr Fiona McLoughlin Healy.
The move follows a 'walkabout' recently by members of Kilcullen Community Action with the area engineer and the councillor.
"Concerns about speed on that stretch have been raised with me on several occasions in the nearby estates," Cllr McLoughlin Healy says. "It's actually a very wide piece of road, and narrowing it for traffic would help. A dedicated cycle lane would be one way of doing it, with the benefit of providing safer cycle travel."
She adds that there is money promised for cycling infrastructure under the Climate Action Plan 2019, and a strategy needs to be in place to access this when it becomes available.
The suggested stretch of cycleway could be part of a larger plan for making Kilcullen a more cycle and pedestrian-friendly environment.
